‘After exploring Cat Ba Island for a day, Florian was hooked. Initially I was a bit reluctant to throw my new young friend to the two wheeled highway wolves. But this guy had the perfect mix of enthusiasm and tranquillity. After meeting up a bit further south we procured two scooters and spent the next couple of weeks loosely following the Ho Chi Minh Trail through central Vietnam. Eating Banh Mi and Pho Bo at roadside food stalls, hiking out to the worlds biggest caves. Admiring the simplicity of rural Vietnamese life and avoiding head on collisions with domestic pigs and crazy truck drivers overtaking other crazy truck drivers.’

The largest of the land animals, elephants also have the largest brain. A well developed hippocampus and 3 times as many neurons than a human. They sleep standing up but only need 2-3 hours per day. They have excellent smell and hearing able to detect sound waves at 9hz , well below the human range. With the soft pads in their feet they can walk almost silently and ‘hear’ deep pitched sounds that vibrate through the ground.
Intelligent, gentle, strong and loyal. Every year go somewhere different. So I’ve got a little formula I try to implement. Wake up somewhere new on my birthday. This year it was on top of Queensland’s highest mountain- Bartle Frere. A trail I’ve been meaning to tackle for a while and well worth the effort if you’re around Cairns in the tropical far north. After a chilly night camped in the rainforest and a few tough hours of walking I think I earned my birthday beer.

The mighty Melbourne Cricket Ground, and surrounding suburbs are normally buzzing with excitement on grand final day. This year the stadium sits empty, the dead heart of a lifeless city that has just endured one of the worlds longest and strictest lockdowns.
- [ ] A good opportunity for reflection and a vision of what the city might look like next year, especially if the media and authorities declare another ‘pandemic’.
Are the good citizens of this once vibrant and eclectic city capable and responsible enough to practice good hygiene, stay home when unwell and protect the most vulnerable members of the community? Or will they need another round of contact tracing and drone surveillance, roadside checkpoints,mandatory masks, curfews and work permits (provided you’re permitted to work).
With recommendations befitting the circumstances should people be allowed to choose where they go, who they see, when they work, what they wear and how they interact. Or should those decisions be left to a small group of individuals who’s policies are based on fear and alarmism.
Most importantly, should the efficacy and ramifications of the recent measures be open to robust, honest public debate and consultation?Or should all discussion and scientific evidence that doesn’t gel with the narrative be censored and oppressed?
Will this city and this state continue to lose its greatest sporting events and it’s revered arts and foodie culture?
